This disease is caused by a fungus and typically occurs in cool and humid seasons. It affects all parts of plants such as chickpeas, peas, and other legumes. The disease manifests as oval or elongated lesions on stems and pods, with a central pale brown area surrounded by darker brown margins. On pods and stems, these lesions may be slightly sunken, and the seeds inside the pods may fail to develop properly. The infection can spread to the seeds, leading to poor germination. The disease stunts plant growth, and when it affects young plants, it can cause damping-off. If infection occurs during flowering or pod-setting stages, the plant may die in patches.
