False Smut/ Green Smut

Symptom

Symptoms become visible as grain start to mature. Affected spikelets are transferred into a large yellow-green velvety mass of spores. The colour of the ball darkens or changes to greenish black. Not more than four spikelets are usually affected per panicle. In general, yields are not reduced by this disease, but the spore balls can reduce grain quality. The disease is more likely with high nitrogen rates. Fungicides applied at the boot growth stage suppress disease development.
